EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic technique that utilizes the power of eye movement and neural networks to provide relief from symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, anxiety and a variety of other issues.
I like to think of EMDR as a form of digestion. Most of us are familiar with the basics of our digestive system, and with the result of a poorly functioning digestive system. Unprocessed memories can become 'stuck'. EMDR works to process and 'digest' these memories so that they are no longer damaging. Sometimes, we might not even be aware that a memory, or network of memories, is influencing our present life. They become automatic reactions connected to our memory networks, that might cause negative or harmful thoughts, emotions, or physical responses. EMDR therapy can help us identify the memory or memory networks responsible and then process it.
How does this work?
EMDR works by targeting unprocessed memories and the emotions, sensations, and thoughts associated with them. When a memory is properly processed, we learn from it and are desensitized to its triggers. We still remember it, but our response to it is no longer there. This is done by using Rapid Eye Movement, the brain's own ability to process.
EMDR is an internationally recognized treatment for trauma and a variety of disorders. If you'd like to learn more about how it might help you, reach out for a free consultation.
